Curly Hair: It’s much simpler than you think

Do you have crazy frizzy curly hair that you don’t know what to do with? Have you tried just about everything in the book? Bought a million different products, broke the bank and can not figure it out? Well then you are in the right place! I have been on a journey for the last 6 years to figure out how to take care of my curly hair. From products that were terrible for my health, to cleaner ones, to techniques that actually work. I’m here to share with you what I’ve learned and how to care for your hair!

You only need these 4 simple things for healthy curly hair. And what’s better? You can find it all at Walmart Target or Amazon! All for around $15 a month depending on how much product you use. ($50 up front to get started) And it is as simple as this.

  1. Shampoo and Conditioner
  2. Hair Mask
  3. Hair Oil
  4. Brush

With that let’s start from the top.

Curly hair needs moisture and a lot of it so when I buy my shampoo and conditioner from Native I make sure to get a moisturizing one. They have several different options but I like the Peaches and Nectar. They are the best shampoos and conditioners that I have ever had. 100% fantastic!

Native’s hair mask is also 10/10. Nothing like a hair mask to add moisture!  I use it every week or two but sometimes more or less often. Only when it feels like my hair needs it. And wow does it leave my hair feeling so amazing, light and soft!

More moisture! I use Shea Moisture’s bonding hair oil to further keep the frizz under control. I apply as needed, which is usually daily. And it smells amazing! They also have an oil called Ultra Moisture & Nourish Oil that also looks really good and I will probably try next.

This is a brush with very stiff bristles that can get through your curly hair. I was astonished by how well it worked when I first used it. And now it’s a must have in the shower when I’m detangling.

How to use them

Using products correctly is just as important as having the right ones. Let’s learn to make the most of these products and how to not undo there benefits. And that starts with showering.

Showering

  1. Only wash your hair every 3 days or so, washing every day can cause your hair to be brittle and dry and our curls need moisture!
  2. When you shower, shampoo twice this helps to get your scalp really clean and light feeling. Avoid the ends of your hair, we don’t want to dry them out.
  3. Apply conditioner but avoid the roots, weighing down our curls at the root leaves us with a flat itchy head. This is also the time to brush and comb all the snarls out. Leave the conditioner in for a about 5 minutes. We want our hair to drink up that moisture during this time.
  4. When it comes time to rinse, try and use as cold water as possible. Warm water causes the hair follicles to open up, accepting moisture, when the water is cold they close, sealing the moisture inside. This is why hot humid days make your hair so frizzy! Your hair is opening up in the heat and taking in the water in the air. Poof! When I rinse my conditioner I go until the conditioner feels mostly but not entirely out. I avoid that sticky feeling when my hair has completely gone dry. But this is up to you. Leaving some in has worked really well for me.
  5. On the days that your hair needs a little more moisture and you can do a mask. Skip the conditioner. Apply the mask to your hair and let it sit for at 3-5 minutes and then rinse it like you would for conditioner.
  6. When you get out of the shower, flip those curls upside down and scrunch them up towards your head with a towel. Scrunch and squeeze, scrunch and squeeze. Go in an up and down pattern. Do not go back and forth, and do not rough up our hair unless you want to unleash the frizz monster. During this time make sure you curls are not sticking to your scalp. We will not be combing or brushing after this point. So during your scrunching make sure your hair is getting off your head and is not slicked down anymore.
  7. Apply hair oil to the full length of hair, avoiding the scalp. You’ll quickly get an idea of how much is enough to make them defined but not oily.
  8. Let air dry or sleep on wet hair to encourage your curls to curl up to the root. I flip my hair up on top of my pillow above my head to help them dry nicely and to stop from crushing them.

So in short!

  1. Shampoo roots 2 times
  2. Apply conditioner to ends and detangle (Leave for at least 5 minutes)
  3. Rinse with cold water, stopping before your hair feels dry
  4. Get out of the shower and flip your head upside down. Scrunch and squeeze to dry
  5. Apply hair oil

If you do a mask just replace the conditioner in step 2 with a mask

And that’s all you need to know to keep healthy curly hair. But it doesn’t stop here! If you want to go one step further there are some more things you can do to treat your hair!

Pillow cases and towels

Curls get frizzy really easily. To help minimize the frizz before your next wash you can get a satin or silk pillowcase. I have a couple and they do make a difference. My hair gets less frizzy overnight. (They both have the same effect but I prefer the feel of silk)

Something else you can do to really nip the frizz in the bud is to use a microfiber towel to dry your hair after showering. I just use a hand towel size. It will leave more water in your hair than a regular towel which is good because those curls absolutely chug moisture! (if you haven’t noticed curls need a lot of moisture.)
